How to book on trips? Booking instructions are in the relevant trip e-mail sent to clog members.

What sort of cycling we do

We have easy cycle rides using trains from London to explore unusual places you never knew were there, rather than cycling in chain gangs or rushing through as much tarmac as possible.

Together we explore lost railways, cycle ferries, old forts, castles, marshes, canals, ancient churches, winding rivers and wide skies, ancient woods, village greens, old pubs, martello towers, windmills, follies, sea marks, sailing barges, light ships, gun emplacements and more.

    Day ride

Taking your bike on trains in London and the SE

We regularly use trains to get out of London for our day rides.  There is no need to book your bike on these trains on day rides (and indeed it is not normally possible).

As a general rule bike booking is for longer distance trains rather than commuter trains but  you can get definitive information by checking the rail company websites.

Some mainline trains have a designated bike area but it is not normally necessary to always use it.  There may be too many bikes in it already or it may be that you are joining the train at an intermediate stop and it isn't clear where to stand in order to get to the bike area in time when the train times.

Do use it if you can as it will make your journey more comfortable.

The main restriction for mainline trains is that you cannot take your bike (unless folded) on trains arriving in London in the morning weekday peak period or leaving London in the evening peak period.  NB the start and end of the peak period is defined slightly differently for mainline trains compared with Overground, DLR, tube and Elizabeth line.

For the Overground, DLR, tube and Elizabeth line the peak period applies to trains in any direction. Outside peak times bicycles are allowed on the Overground, DLR, Elizabeth Line, the surface parts of the tube and the "cut and cover" underground lines but not in the underground sections of the other tube lines.  Consult the relevant website if you are not sure as the tube is quite strict about this.

Where to park your bike securely in Central London

Free bike parking with security cameras

The City of London car parks provide secure parking free for bicycles (and motorcycles)

Baynard House near Blackfriars EC4V 4BQ:  Free for bikes, 24h security, humans on site - extra bike racks outside glass fronted security office, accessible toilet (according to the Facebook group London Cycling)

Another recommended one is near the Barbican on London Wall EC2V 5DY which is an underground car park.

Other City of London car parks which provide free secure parking for bicycle are:

    Minories E1 8LP

    Smithfield EC1A 9DS

    Tower Hill EC3R 6DT

    For more information: https://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/services/parking/motorcycles-and-bicycles

    Paid for secure bike parking

This has been recommended on another websites:  https://www.spokesafe.com

Some locations include lockers, repair stations, pumps and charging points for ebikes

    The GOBLIN rides are coming....

    GOBLIN RIDES
    GOBLIN RIDES

These are a series of short (10 to 15 mile) winter cycle rides starting from and/or ending at GOBLIN stations for those who live within easy reach of the Gospel Oak Barking LINe

GOBLIN 1 will start from Wanstead Park station (or you can also use nearby Forest Gate station) and goes along Quietway 6 to Olympic Park, Hackney Marshes, Lea Navigation, Victoria Park, Mile End Park, Narrow St by the Thames and Cable St to Shadwell where we catch the train to Barking to connect back onto the GOBLIN (or alternative stations home for those for whom that is more convenient).
There will be several other GOBLIN rides in this series and they are likely to take place in the short dark days of December and January.

    News

We will all remember 2020 as the year of coronavirus.

Here is a slideshow  of photos from our activities from January to July 2020!

    Large Group Cycle rides guidance

Precis based on British Cycling Way Forward Doc March 26th

     Before the activity

Participants must not attend if they have Covid-19 symptoms, have someone in their household who does, are in the extremely vulnerable category or if they have been asked to remain at home by the UK Government test and trace system.

Consider the risks when planning your route, avoiding busy areas where possible, and consider how social distancing measures may impact on the activity, including things like the areas where you start, stop or take a break.

Ensure participants are able to maintain appropriate social distancing while not riding

Ensure all participants are aware of the safety guidelines and what is expected before, during and after the activity, including how to comply with social distancing guidelines and all other health, hygiene and safety guidelines

    During the activity

Participants must practice good respiratory hygiene during the activity (i.e. coughing, sneezing into a tissue or the crook of an elbow).

Riders required to maintain a ‘one metre plus’ distance from others while riding.

When riding two abreast, riders should aim to stay beside the same rider for as much of the ride as possible

Ensure all health and safety and emergency First aid guidelines are followed.

Participants must provide their own equipment and refreshments and avoid sharing the like of water bottles and food.

Refreshment stops are permitted, however at these points you should default to the Government’s general guidance for social meetings and split into wholly separate groups of no more than six riders. Individuals shouldn’t move between different groups during your stop. Make yourself aware of and adhere to all other guidance put in place by the establishment.

    After the activity

Participants should wash/sanitise their hands after the session.

Participants leaving the activity must maintain social distancing.

If a participant develops Covid-19 symptoms within two days of taking part follow NHS Test and Trace guidance and inform leader so that the other participants can be quickly informed and take the necessary steps in line with NHS Test and Trace guidelines.  When informing other participants, the leader or coach should not name the person who tested positive in order to protect their privacy unless there is a specific reason.

Socially distanced outdoor recreation restarts on 29th March!

What is currently planned and more provisional events are likely to be added to the list as we get closer to the end of lockdown so keep coming back to check!

    • Sunday 4th April Highgate to Hackney Wick 9.6 miles.

     Kentish Variations series

Each month there will be a walk in the footsteps of medieval knights - or to be more honest, a 21st century attempt to roughly walk where knights riding out from Tonbridge Castle in the Middle Ages had more sense and rode horses to avoid the mud. These walks will all be centred on the area around Tonbridge which is easy to get to by train. The rough plan for these is as follows:
    • April. Penshurst and Chiddingstone. 9-10 miles linear from Penshurst to Leigh
    • May. The Darling Buds of May. 12-13 miles figure-of-8 from Paddock Wood
    • June. Shipbourne and Fairhill. 14-15 miles circular from Tonbridge.
    • July. Plaxtol and Fairlawne. 13-14 miles circular from Tonbridge
    • August. Somerhill and Tudeley. 11-12 miles circular from Tonbridge
    • September. Leigh and Bidborough. 11-12 miles figure-of-8 from Leigh
    • October. Hildenborough and the history of pillboxes. 10-11 miles circular from Tonbridge
Each month there will also be a walk a bit further afield in Kent (or Sussex). The rough plan for those is as follows:
    • April. Great Expectations (North Kent Marshes). 11 miles circular from Higham
    • May. The Darling Buds of May. 13-14 miles from Pluckley
    • June. Rewilding Rewind. 11 miles circular from Wadhurst
    • July. The Hoo Peninsula. 11 miles circular from Strood. Subject to tides
    • August. Broadwater Warren and the Sandstone Rocks of the Weald. 10 miles circular from Tunbridge Wells
    • September. Isle of Harty. 10 miles from Leysdown-on-Sea. Subject to bus travel becoming easier
    • October. Canterbury Bridges. 6 miles circular from Canterbury
When social distancing has eased, it is hoped that there will be a Great Plague day walk and a couple of evening walks in London.

    Cycling

We have cycle rides all year round, most weeks in the warmer months but less frequently in winter with distances ranging from 15 to 40 miles.  These are easily accessible by public transport on quiet roads or cycle paths, great for beginners or anyone who enjoys discovering places they never knew existed rather than lots of tarmac. Lunch in a pub and morning or afternoon tea in cafes.

Our cycle rides, walks and other clog events are aimed at adults rather than families.

Always bring a spare tube (that fits your wheels) on cycle rides in case of punctures.

By bike we explore rivers, canals, forts, castles, coast, marshes, gardens, woods, ruins, sea walls, churches, mansions, cycle-ferries, churchyards, villages, lost railways....

We also have a number of easy cycle touring trips abroad each year.

Photos from past cycle rides and walks including:
NB You need to have been on on at least a couple of day cycles before you can come on a cycle trip abroad.

    Cycle rides are denoted with

Carry a spare inner tube in case of punctures.

Normally non-CLOG members can come up to 3 cycle rides or other events to try us out before joining but at present everything is members-only due to coronavirus.

NB Central London Outdoor Group is non-commercial and events are organised by other members of the club on a voluntary basis.  All participants should make themselves aware of the risks inherent in walking, cycling and other outdoor activities and take responsibility for their own actions and choices of activity.

    Cycle trip March 2020 Puglia

The Puglia cycle trip has been brought forward to the second half of March. The idea is to fly to Bari (Ryanair, Easyjet and BA fly direct from London to Bari and the flights are very reasonably priced), overnight in Bari and then take the train to incredible cave city of Matera - one of the most spectacular cities in Italy and a Unesco world heritage site: just google it to see the amazing photos.

Spend 2 nights in Matera and hire bikes there and then take the train to Altamura when the cycle ride begins. We cycle from Altamura to Trani over 4 or 5 days, visiting lots of lovely old towns on the way eg Cassona del Murge, Aquaviva del fonti, Cassamassima, Adelfia, Bitetto, Terlizzi, Corato, Andria, Barletta and Trani. We finish on the coast

We did a cycle trip to Puglia a couple of years ago - see: the photos this one is to a different part of Puglia (although we still go to Matera) but no Trulli houses or hill towns this time but it should still be very enjoyable.

The route is mainly downhill or flat on quiet roads.

Accommodation: we would book that ourselves using websites such as booking.com. Cost of bike hire (and bike collection in Trani): around 80 Euros

This trip is for CLOG members only. To join CLOG: https://membermojo.co.uk/clog

Easter 2020 Lake District Elterwater Trip Information

Easter Lake District Trip Thursday 9th to Tuesday 14th April 2020- five nights

The CLOG Easter Lake District trip is to Elterwater in the heart of the stunning Langdale Valley.
Elterwater is described by the Wainwright Society as a perfect base for fell walking, with so many notable fells in the vicinity”. Staying there gives us the opportunity to climb the Langdale Pikes and there are also plenty of stunning lower level walks in easy access, which could be useful if the weather is poor.

Elterwater is fairly easy to get too, as Windermere train station is about eight miles away and from there you can come by bus with a change at Ambleside.

We will be staying five nights at the independent Elterwater hostel (https://www.elterwaterhostel.co.uk/) which has excellent reviews (five stars on trip advisor). It was formally a YHA hostel and is run on similar lines. So, we can make our own food in the kitchen or order breakfast, packed lunches and dinners. There is also a lounge for us to gather each morning to plan trips and a drying room if we return sodden. We have booked four rooms for thirteen people.

Elterwater is a quiet village with stunning views and a couple of excellent pubs for our food and drink needs – the Britannia and Eltermere Inn. The Britannia gets the thumbs up from some CLOG ale drinkers and is described by the hostel as being in stumbling distance from its front door.

There are a few accommodation options, including the pubs, for people who would prefer not to stay in the hostel. However, if you wish to book your own accommodation, you must agree this first with one of the Helens who are working with Ralph to organise the trip this year.

We plan to open for bookings on Monday 28th October at 7pm (normal jot form way) and anticipate a charge in the region of £160 (not including meals). We will give priority to people who are willing to lead walks.

You need to be a member to come on this trip.

We will be cycling the Olive Oil Greenway from Jaen to Moriles and part of the Campina Greenway from Ecija to Marchena. See: http://www.viasverdes.com/en/itineraries/itinerario.asp?id=67 and http://www.viasverdes.com/en/itineraries/itinerario.asp?id=50, with some quiet roads between Moriles and Ecija.
