What sort of cycling we do

We have easy cycle rides using trains from London to explore unusual places you never knew were there, rather than cycling in chain gangs or rushing through as much tarmac as possible.

Together we explore lost railways, cycle ferries, old forts, castles, marshes, canals, ancient churches, winding rivers and wide skies, ancient woods, village greens, old pubs, martello towers, windmills, follies, sea marks, sailing barges, light ships, gun emplacements and more.

Day ride

Taking your bike on trains in London and the SE

We regularly use trains to get out of London for our day rides.  There is no need to book your bike on these trains on day rides (and indeed it is not normally possible).

As a general rule bike booking is for longer distance trains rather than commuter trains but  you can get definitive information by checking the rail company websites.

Some mainline trains have a designated bike area but it is not normally necessary to always use it.  There may be too many bikes in it already or it may be that you are joining the train at an intermediate stop and it isn't clear where to stand in order to get to the bike area in time when the train times.

Do use it if you can as it will make your journey more comfortable.

The main restriction for mainline trains is that you cannot take your bike (unless folded) on trains arriving in London in the morning weekday peak period or leaving London in the evening peak period.  NB the start and end of the peak period is defined slightly differently for mainline trains compared with Overground, DLR, tube and Elizabeth line.

For the Overground, DLR, tube and Elizabeth line the peak period applies to trains in any direction. Outside peak times bicycles are allowed on the Overground, DLR, Elizabeth Line, the surface parts of the tube and the "cut and cover" underground lines but not in the underground sections of the other tube lines.  Consult the relevant website if you are not sure as the tube is quite strict about this.

Highlights of a few recent walks and cycle rides

Martello Towers and 12th century Abbey Cycle Ride 23 miles
We cycled out of Great Bentley south to St Osyths where we stopped to look at what remains of the great abbey of St Osyths, then further south to the coast at Seawick and then followed Cycle Route 150 through Clacton and Frinton to Walton on the Naze passing 5 Martello Towers. When we got to Walton explored the Naze nature reserve and admire the fantastic views and the old sea mark tower.

Lost Sussex railways cycle ride: Three Bridges to Tunbridge Wells 23 miles
We cycled out of Three Bridges along the Worth Way to East Grinstead  then along Forest Way which is within the High Weald AONB  to Groombridge. Both cycle paths follow the lost railway that once ran between Crawley and Tunbridge Wells.

Canterbury Bridges. A walk round Canterbury crossing over 30 bridges and looking at islands and watermills.

Pill Box Safari. A walk tracing the history of wartime pill boxes along the River Medway before exploring the scenic countryside round Hildenborough.

Isle of Harty  A walk exploring the remote Isle of Harty.

Stairway to Heaven. A walk round Haysden Country Park, Barden Lake, the Bidborough Ridge, the Straight Mile and Haysden Water reservoir.

The GOBLIN rides are coming....

GOBLIN RIDES
GOBLIN RIDES

These are a series of short (10 to 15 mile) winter cycle rides starting from and/or ending at GOBLIN stations for those who live within easy reach of the Gospel Oak Barking LINe

GOBLIN 1 will start from Wanstead Park station (or you can also use nearby Forest Gate station) and goes along Quietway 6 to Olympic Park, Hackney Marshes, Lea Navigation, Victoria Park, Mile End Park, Narrow St by the Thames and Cable St to Shadwell where we catch the train to Barking to connect back onto the GOBLIN (or alternative stations home for those for whom that is more convenient).
There will be several other GOBLIN rides in this series and they are likely to take place in the short dark days of December and January.

Socially distanced outdoor recreation restarts on 29th March!

What is currently planned and more provisional events are likely to be added to the list as we get closer to the end of lockdown so keep coming back to check!

 Kentish Variations series

Each month there will be a walk in the footsteps of medieval knights - or to be more honest, a 21st century attempt to roughly walk where knights riding out from Tonbridge Castle in the Middle Ages had more sense and rode horses to avoid the mud. These walks will all be centred on the area around Tonbridge which is easy to get to by train. The rough plan for these is as follows:
  • April. Penshurst and Chiddingstone. 9-10 miles linear from Penshurst to Leigh
  • May. The Darling Buds of May. 12-13 miles figure-of-8 from Paddock Wood
  • June. Shipbourne and Fairhill. 14-15 miles circular from Tonbridge.
  • July. Plaxtol and Fairlawne. 13-14 miles circular from Tonbridge
  • August. Somerhill and Tudeley. 11-12 miles circular from Tonbridge
  • September. Leigh and Bidborough. 11-12 miles figure-of-8 from Leigh
  • October. Hildenborough and the history of pillboxes. 10-11 miles circular from Tonbridge
Each month there will also be a walk a bit further afield in Kent (or Sussex). The rough plan for those is as follows:
  • April. Great Expectations (North Kent Marshes). 11 miles circular from Higham
  • May. The Darling Buds of May. 13-14 miles from Pluckley
  • June. Rewilding Rewind. 11 miles circular from Wadhurst
  • July. The Hoo Peninsula. 11 miles circular from Strood. Subject to tides
  • August. Broadwater Warren and the Sandstone Rocks of the Weald. 10 miles circular from Tunbridge Wells
  • September. Isle of Harty. 10 miles from Leysdown-on-Sea. Subject to bus travel becoming easier
  • October. Canterbury Bridges. 6 miles circular from Canterbury
When social distancing has eased, it is hoped that there will be a Great Plague day walk and a couple of evening walks in London.

Cycling

We have cycle rides all year round, most weeks in the warmer months but less frequently in winter with distances ranging from 15 to 40 miles.  These are easily accessible by public transport on quiet roads or cycle paths, great for beginners or anyone who enjoys discovering places they never knew existed rather than lots of tarmac. Lunch in a pub and morning or afternoon tea in cafes.

Our cycle rides, walks and other clog events are aimed at adults rather than families.

Always bring a spare tube (that fits your wheels) on cycle rides in case of punctures.

By bike we explore rivers, canals, forts, castles, coast, marshes, gardens, woods, ruins, sea walls, churches, mansions, cycle-ferries, churchyards, villages, lost railways....

We also have a number of easy cycle touring trips abroad each year.

NB You need to have been on on at least a couple of day cycles before you can come on a cycle trip abroad.

Cycle rides are denoted with

Carry a spare inner tube in case of punctures.

Normally non-CLOG members can come up to 3 cycle rides or other events to try us out before joining but at present everything is members-only due to coronavirus.

NB Central London Outdoor Group is non-commercial and events are organised by other members of the club on a voluntary basis.  All participants should make themselves aware of the risks inherent in walking, cycling and other outdoor activities and take responsibility for their own actions and choices of activity.

Upcoming cycle rides

As well as a huge and varied programme of walks, we have loads of cycle rides coming up.  Full details of these rides can be found in What's On

These cycle rides are easily accessible by public transport from London and great for beginners.   We usually have lunch in a nice pub and either morning or afternoon tea if there is a suitable cafe.
